St Kevin’s bowed out of the under 12 Schools’ Plate competition in Derry City this morning after a thrilling 3–2 extra-time defeat to a very talented St Brigid’s College side.
Lisnaskea made a dream start and took the lead following a superb through ball from John Joe that split the defence. Eoghan reacted quickest, pouncing on the loose ball before hammering an unstoppable effort into the net to give St Kevin’s the advantage.
The lead was doubled just minutes later from a corner kick. The delivery caused panic in the St Brigid’s box and Eoghan was once again in the right place at the right time, latching onto the ball and half-volleying home in clinical fashion to make it 2–0. It was a brilliant spell of football from the boys in blue
St Brigid’s responded strongly and were handed a lifeline after being awarded a penalty. Ultan produced an excellent save from the spot, but despite his heroics the Derry side reacted quickest to scramble the rebound into the net. Buoyed by the goal, St Brigid’s continued to press and were eventually rewarded with an equaliser, a well-placed header that levelled the contest and sent the tie into extra time.
Extra time was fiercely contested, with both sides battling bravely. Just as penalties seemed inevitable, St Brigid’s were awarded a late and controversial penalty in the dying moments. The spot kick was converted, sealing a dramatic 3–2 victory.
Despite the heartbreak, St Kevin’s can be immensely proud of their performance. Eoghan was outstanding with two superbly taken goals, while Ryan and Cathal impressed up front with their work rate and movement. Behind them, James and James were immense, ably assisted by Tom and Dara snuffing out numerous attacks and showing great composure under pressure.
The boys played with tremendous heart and determination against a technically excellent Derry side. Most importantly, they carried themselves with class and were gracious in defeat — a credit to St Kevin’s both on and off the pitch!
