Child Eating from Bowl

KS4 & KS5

The Level 3 Extended Diploma in Childcare and Education (EYE) is for people who want to work in a range of early years’ settings and services with children (and their families). This qualification is designed to help learners build the knowledge and skills needed when working with children and young people from birth to 19 years of age. It covers a diverse range of job roles and occupational areas working in children’s settings including early years. It is suitable for those who wish to work, or are working at an unsupervised level in children’s care, learning and development in Wales and Northern Ireland.

In Year One: Learners need to gain a minimum of 65 credits. 61 of these must be achieved at Level 3 or above. 49 credits must be obtained from the mandatory units and a further 16 credits must be obtained from the choice of optional units. This will usually consist of 20 short units of coursework and 650 learning hours.

In Year Two: The learner requires a further 85 credits to be achieved from mandatory and optional ‘extended’ units. This will be made up of around 14 short units. As well at this the course requires learners to submit three pieces of extended writing which are externally set and externally marked by CACHE.

The three extended assessments are each graded A*-D.

It is a requirement of the qualification that learners undertake a minimum work placement of 700 hours working in real work environments over the two years.
